Theme: Impulse Control – Keeping on Track

Next week is your Fall Break…yay! You finally get a bit of time to get caught up from this hectic semester. I know most of you are making all kinds of plans to get so much work done over the break. If you are anything like me, your plans are big…you will be a super student next week! Okay, let’s be realistic, you need some downtime to recover from the academic demands of this time of year. Make a plan for next week that is reasonable; a plan that does not involve 8 hours of homework every day. You will just procrastinate because you will fear and dread a day like that. I know I would!! You need to face some of your fears and work slowly on getting caught up. My advice to you is plan to work a little and play a little each day. You need balance. If you have a plan that gets you caught up and you break it down each day, when you are in “play” mode, please let go of all your thoughts like, “I should be studying”. If you keep putting pressure on yourself in your downtime, you really are not having any downtime at all. Don’t “should” on yourself 😉 You need a balance between work and play for you to manage your impulse to just avoid it all and procrastinate. If you have a plan and your “should be studying” thoughts start…say to yourself “I have a plan and if I follow this plan, I will get caught up”.


Today…Make a plan that covers all that you need to do to get caught up for the semester. Start with a list in each course. Spread your academic “to do” list out over the week. Plan to do unpleasant work during times where you tend to be high energy (the most awake!). Don’t forget to play, relax and have fun this week too…guilt free!
