Theme: Empathy – Learning to “Read Others” Helps With Academic Success

Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution. Kahlil Gibran (Lebanese Artist, Poet, Writer)

eLearn Module:  Empathy

Often people associate Empathy with how you understand others and respond to them in a kind and compassionate way. This is very true! But, what I find is that people who are empathetic tend to be able to easily treat others with respect and kindness, but often forget about how they treat themselves. Empathy goes both ways!!! Being a good student means developing Empathy for yourself and others.

The main component of Empathy is ‘being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes’; to be able to see what their world looks like through their eyes and experience. Often people don’t take the time to think about what others may be experiencing or think about how that person’s behaviour is effected by what is going on in their lives. As a student, Empathy it is an important skill to develop because being able to “read” your classmates or professors can help you succeed in your program. Understanding your professors’ point of view, their academic and life experience, can help you to figure out what they may find important in the information. Hint Hint…what they find important tends to find its way on to tests and expectations for papers and projects! By developing your Empathy skills with your classmates, it can help group project go much more smoothly. Understanding what life is like for the other person, helps you to know what to ask of and what to expect from another person. Learning to “read” people is an essential academic strength!

Today… Think about your professors. What is their academic background? What are their hobbies and interests? What do they emphasize most in class? What do you think may be important to them? Use this information to ask relevant questions, study for exams and develop strong projects/papers.

Empathy is a sign of strength that can carry you through your education successfully!
