Okay, we have come face-to-face with academic “Crunch Time”! You have 11 more days until the end of classes for this semester. The deadline to withdraw without academic penalty has long passed, but you are afraid that you may fail your classes. Now is not the time to throw it all away because you are overwhelmed. These grades will follow you on your transcript, forever. At least try to raise them as high as you can so that they do the least amount of damage to your GPA. Don’t get me wrong, emotions are great sources of information, but often people misinterpret the message. Right now you are probably feeling so dragged down by all the school work that you need to get done that it may even feel impossible to get anything done. Maybe these extreme emotions are trying to tell you that you are not utilizing other ways of getting through this and getting stuff done. You’re just trying to do the same old things and they are not working, at all. Did you know that there are people on campus whose job it is to help you succeed!?!? Okay I am being sarcastic, but I know that you learned in your orientations that there are very helpful people waiting for you and you just need to scrape a little gumption together and access the support.
Here is a little “these are the academic relationships in your neighbourhood” for those Sesame Street fans out there. There are Peer Tutors who can help you understand any aspect of your subjects better, there are supportive Peer Mentors available to help you find your way through this academic jungle, there are Student Success Advisors who offer exceptional guidance through your program maze and there are Counsellors available to help you with study skills, managing your stress, putting things in perspective and offering well timed support. These are just a few neighbourhood highlights!!! Visit any of the folks above and they can link you with EVEN MORE support available at Mohawk College.
Today… Before you bail on your program, and yourself, use your interpersonal relationship skills to seek help from other people. The people I listed above are easy to approach. We’re trained to help and love doing it. All you need to do is get it together enough to track us down and ask for help.
Please do track us down because you and your academic career are worth it!
