eLearn Module:  Reality Testing

Well you are in your final week of classes. Assignments are due, tests are coming and you are tired. You have reached the wall of what you think you are capable of…you just can’t do any more. Sound familiar?!? Yes, you should be tired this time of the academic year, but you shouldn’t use your current judgment to decide what you are capable of. You are tired and worn out and this is not the best time to do your best thinking about yourself. This is actually the time to step up, set goals a little higher than you think you can achieve. This is where you learn what you are truly capable of. I like to tell people that “you are who you are in the tough times”…anyone can be awesome when everything is going their way! Now is the time to push…just a little…and move closer to who you really are as a student. “Why” I hear you asking? Because the benefits that you will gain are immense! You will develop a sense that “what doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger” (Nietzsche), you begin to develop a stronger and more positive sense of yourself and your capabilities. Pretty cool and very possible with a little of that 99% perspiration!

There is this really interesting piece of psychological research called the Rosenthal Effect”. Essentially, the “Rosenthal Effect” found that if teachers were led to expect enhanced performance from some children, then the children did indeed show that enhancement.

So, think about it…if you push yourself a little, expect more from yourself…challenge yourself to go that one little step further…maybe you will surprise yourself in being able to ‘rise to the occasion’ and do better than you expected. Check out the Video later in this blog with one of my hero’s Dr. Philip Zimbardo on “Learning Behaviour” (5 minutes). This quick little video talks about the Rosenthal Effect.

Today… try and study a ½ hour longer, go over a concept one more time, create something visual to help you remember something for a test or take a moment to edit your final papers one more time. Just do that ‘little bit extra’ and reveal your ability to produce something of quality.

I would love to hear more about how this has helped you! Send along some comments!
