Theme: Planning for Success in 2012!
The person who says it cannot be done
should not interrupt the person doing it.
Associated eLearn Module: Reality Testing
Well, 2011 is almost over. I am sure that you have had a busy semester in school! The great thing about being a student is that you have TWO opportunities to push the “re-start” button and try things differently, the resolutions that come with your Academic New Year each September and New Year’s Resolutions. So, if you set goals for yourself, personally and academically in September that you were not as successful at meeting as you would have liked, here is your chance, once again! Let’s start the year with a positive step forward and start thinking about the concept of “Self Fulfilling Prophecy”. This is a notion that “any positive or negative expectation you have about circumstances, events, or people that may affect your behaviour toward them in a manner that causes those expectations to be fulfilled”. Pretty cool! If you think that you can’t…you are right! If you think that you can…you are right! Just a suggestion…I would focus on thinking that you CAN 😉
Now…I am going to get all Psych-Nerdy on you! I am going to talk about Locus of Control.
There are two ways to shape your attitude and approach to your life, one with a belief that things are out of your control (External Locus of Control) or the other with the attitude that things are within your control (Internal Locus of Control). People behave differently if they have an internal versus an external locus of control. For instance, people who think their success on an exam depends on their own skill and preparation (internal locus of control) are more likely to work harder and improve their abilities. People who believe their success depends on random chance or luck (external locus of control) don’t tend to work as hard to improve their skills.
Again, I would suggest working on an Internal Locus of Control 😉
In the first week of January 2012…watch for a series of surveys that I will be sending out that will help you with your 2012 building of your skills and fostering your Internal Locus of Control attitude which will help you to be successful as a student and as a person.
