                                    Emotional Self Awareness


Well, this was your first week back at school, or for some of you, you are starting the first semester of your program. I thought that I would sneak up on you now when you are not yet overwhelmed and are probably more receptive to what I want to share with you. I know, I know, us Psych people are sneaky ones 😉


What I have found as a counsellor, is that once the semester gets into full swing and all the academic obligations are piling up, students tend to get very overwhelmed. Feeling overwhelmed is pretty much awful for everyone and human beings are masters at avoiding this ugly feeling. The problem is that the usual response, and coping strategy, is avoidance. The problem begins here because avoidance generally leads to procrastination; if you just avoid it and put it off, you think that you are feeling better or at least you get a moment of relief. I have seen so many students get into this state, start avoiding everything and find themselves dropping out of their programs because they think that this is the only solution. It’s not, so please talk to your Student Success Advisor, your Program Coordinator or a Counsellor to explore your options…and you have more options that you think!

Would you rather just be proactive and avoid feeling this overwhelmed?!?!


…how about a suggestion to avoid feeling the debilitating state of being overwhelmed and learn more about assessing and building your Emotional Self Awareness?  This is what I would suggest J It is so important to figure out what your emotions are telling you and to learn more about why you procrastinate.

Today…think about your procrastination patterns, about when you feel most overwhelmed and what your typical behavioural responses to this ugly feeling are. Do you want to change the way you deal with this? Ok, first step is to assess your procrastination habits. I will be uploading a Procrastination Questionnaire tomorrow. Check back here and take the questionnaire. After you are done, be sure to check this blog often because I will be uploading tips throughout the semester to help you with your procrastination.


Most of all this semester, remember that these feelings are fleeting, they don’t stick around long, please don’t make any quick decisions, while in this state, such as leaving your program. “This too shall pass” and you don’t want to regret your decisions when the overwhelmed cloud lifts.
