Self Actualization is all about living up to your full potential. This is a lifelong process, but you will know when you are on the right path by the excitement you feel about what you are learning, doing and setting goals for. When you are on the right path, you will feel energized, motivated and a sense of self-satisfaction. Okay, have I sold it to you!??! I know it is hard work, but it is so worth it.


Often the one of the reasons why students don’t feel this way is because they are stuck in a cycle of procrastination, which has many causes. People will procrastinate because they haven’t learned the skills needed to follow through, they may be perfectionists which can create so much pressure that people avoid the task, some students fear failure or disapproval and some students wait to “feel” motivated.  It is important to figure out when you tend to procrastinate, what task types and why you think you tend to put things off.

Here are 5 quick things to start doing today to help with your procrastination…


1.      Create the Right Environment for You:  figure out where you have the least amount of distractions and the most motivation. Try to make it a habit to complete your work in that environment. Many students find it easier to get their work done at school rather than home because home has come to symbolize rest and relaxation.

2.      Figure Out What Works for You: use the successful study strategies that you have already learned; and, always take the time to participate in Study Skills Workshops offered at Mohawk to build more. Click Here for more info about workshops this semester!

3.      Why Are You Procrastinating? This is an important thing to explore about yourself so that you can start working on strategies. Take the Procrastination Questionnaire to find out more specifically why you procrastinate.

4.      Find a Study Buddy or Accountability Partner: we are so much more effective when we try to avoid letting other people down. It is easy to let yourself down…there are no witnesses!

5.      Focus on the Benefits of Working on Procrastination: Procrastination interferes with your academic and personal success, and it creates unnecessary stress in your life. It also adds pointless, and detrimental, emotions to your life experience such as guilt, feeling inadequate, depression, low self worth, etc. Also, visualize how good, and relieved, you will feel when the unpleasant task is done. Sometimes this is the only way; just plow through it so that you can feel better. If I waited until I felt like doing something, I would rarely get anything done!


“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star” is so perfect for procrastination. Yes, you are going to struggle at times, not want to do things, not believe that you are capable; but the most important thing to remember is that these feelings are necessary for you to push yourself further and find out what you are capable of!


Do it! Really, it is worth rising further than you expected!
