Theme: Reality Testing – Get to Work!!

Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it. Henry David Thoreau

Associated eLearn Module:  Reality Testing

Okay, here is the reality of being a student. We often look around at other students and think that they have it so much easier than we do. “Those” students just learn better than I do. “They” just have it easier than I do. In reality, “those” students have often just learned more about how they get motivated and what works for them. So, really, you are not far behind becoming one of the “those” students!

Get busy and learn how you learn, figure out what best motivates you and where you tend to procrastinate. This will help you make a plan that is REAL for you.

Today… Here are some tips to get you into the Reality of motivating yourself to reach your potential.

Whatever it is that you have to get done…

  • Feel it already done: Imagine what it will feel like when you have completed the task(s). Imagine the relief you will feel and the opportunity you will have for some R&R.
  • Work with a finish line: Be clear about what your outcome is going to be before getting started. Set a finish line for yourself. Plan what steps need to be taken to create a finished product. Ask yourself, what will this finished product contain or look like, roughly?
  • Create reasons why you will succeed: Instead of focusing on what you can’t do or hate doing, bring attention to the reasons why you will succeed, and shift the focus from the reasons why you will not. Your mind and feelings are not in control, you are! Start managing your mind by creating a list of reasons why you can’t help but achieve your goal!
  • Have a bigger vision: Focus on why you are doing this task that you are not completely into. Will it help you get a higher grade in a course that is part of your program? Will this course help you to graduate from your program? Will your diploma help you to get a great job after you graduate? When you are stuck and not wanting to do something, visualize your outcome, daily, for a minimum of 5 minutes. Why am I doing this again?!?!

After you have learned more about your Learning Style, Motivation Style and Procrastination Barriers, list five things that you have learned about your reality…what gets you going.

For Example…

Here what I know about myself:

  1. I need to just get started and then I am able gain momentum and finish the task.
  2. I always need to remind myself why I am doing it…keep my vision in focus.
  3. I am the most motivated when I am passionate about what I am doing and I know that I just have to kick my own butt when I am not passionate. I don’t wait to FEEL motivated. I do it because it will benefit me and I can see the finish line.
  4. I know that my dominant learning style is VISUAL and that I need to see and visualize what needs to be done, I need to see an example, create a graphic for myself, write out a plan…I need to see the big picture first.
  5. I know that when I am procrastinating it is because I don’t have a plan, I can’t see the finish line.

Figure out what the 5 THINGS are that can get you motivated!

Get busy…get sooooo busy that your success will just creep up on you 😉
